On the go nutrition

We’re getting to that time of year when there seems to be a bank holiday every 2 minutes and the majority of the UK pack up and get away to enjoy the long weekend.

But how do you ensure that your nutrition stays on track when you have to eat on the go or have very few cooking facilities?

One of the most useful things you can do is to plan ahead. When you’re travelling, whether for business or pleasure, the last thing you need is to be stressing about food.

When I head away with WWWUK for weekend trips I will often cook up a batch of food and portion it out into containers. Popular options, that keep well in a cool bag include –

  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Baked sweet potatoes
  • Seasoned cooked meats
  • Homemade granola bars (WWWUK link)
  • Roasted vegetables – parsnips, carrots, onions, tomatoes, peppers, courgette
  • Energy bombs (WWWUK link)

I can tell you from personal experience that cooked broccoli and fish do not make good options if you want to keep your car companions as friends.

Another great alternative is to pick up some pre made food. When driving I usually map out service stations that have at least one of the following options, I find that you can grab something pretty decent from places such as –

  • M&S – bagged salads, cold meats, fruit/vegetable pots, olives,
  • Prêt a manger – boiled egg/salmon pot, salads, soups, sushi salads
  • Waitrose – as above at M&S
  • Sushi restaurants

The best services, if you happen to be heading north, is Tebay services (in Cumbria). They were voted best service station 2012 and boast a farm shop which has a butchers counter, cheese counter and deli, as well as a great little cafe serving fresh local produce.

Avoiding the obvious places such as fast food joints is great, but also be aware that many of the on the go bars that you can pick up are filled with sugar and other additives and preservatives. Nuts make a great alternative for when you need something to sustain you on a long drive and you can throw in some dried fruit or dark chocolate pieces for an extra energy boost!
